About
囱 is a simplified form of 囪, which originated as the top component of 悤 and depicts a line piercing an object. The outer enclosure 囗 provides a frame, and the internal strokes, originally that pierced line, later came to suggest a lattice, a wooden grate, or smoke escaping through an opening. The character first meant "window" (now written 窗), then shifted to "chimney", a vent for smoke from a kitchen or furnace.
