Originally written as 亖 (four horizontal strokes), the numeral four adopted its current form 四 to avoid visual confusion when read vertically. This newer character originally depicted breathing through the nose and was the early form of 呬. Its use for the number four arose through phonetic loan, and that numerical function has endured while its original meaning was gradually lost.
