About
The character 兕 denotes a large, rhinoceros-like beast from classical Chinese texts, famed for its tough hide used in armor. Its modern form shows a top part resembling "凹" and a bottom like "儿", a simplified shape evolved through centuries of writing rather than a direct assembly of those components. Originally, it depicted an animal with distinct horns, setting it apart from other bovines and large mammals. Historically, scholars have debated its exact identity, interpreting it either as an extinct native rhinoceros or a mythological creature, so its modern use is largely confined to classical studies.
