About
纻 is the simplified form of the traditional character 紵, which refers to ramie, a fibre-yielding plant in the nettle family, or the coarse fabric woven from it. The traditional character is a phono-semantic compound: the semantic radical 糸 (silk/thread) indicates the textile connection, while 宁 supplies the pronunciation. In the simplified form, the radical 糸 is replaced by its simplified counterpart 纟, and the phonetic 宁 remains unchanged.
