About
缀 is the simplified form of 綴, a phono-semantic compound. It pairs the silk radical 纟 (traditional 糸), which signals an action involving thread or textiles, with the component 叕 that provides the sound. The original word, however, was first written with 叕 alone, a pictograph showing a person with hands and feet tied up, directly depicting binding. The addition of the silk radical narrowed this meaning to binding with needle and thread, yielding the literal sense of sewing or stitching separate cloth pieces into a unified item. Over time, the idea of joining physical parts was applied metaphorically to language and thought: 缀 now also describes the act of composing essays, linking words, or piecing together complex ideas.
