About
蕰 (wēn) is a phono-semantic compound: the grass radical 艹 (cǎo) marks it as a plant, while 温 (wēn) 'warm' supplies the pronunciation. In Chinese botanical texts, it denotes an aquatic plant of the Hippuris genus (mare's tail), found in shallow waters and wetlands. Unlike many plant names that took on medicinal or metaphorical uses, 蕰 has remained confined to its taxonomic sense, appearing almost exclusively in specialized literature on aquatic flora.
