luxuriant (of plants)

Etymology

About

is a phono-semantic compound character whose top element, the grass radical , assigns it to the semantic field of plants and vegetation, while the bottom component provides the sound. Its original sense captured the visual impression of plants growing in a thick, lush, thriving cluster. Because the language later coined simpler graphs for "lush", never gained currency as an everyday adjective and is now encountered almost exclusively in classical verse and descriptive agricultural accounts from historical texts.
