About
褦 is a phono-semantic compound character almost exclusively used in the binome 褦襶 (nàidài). It is composed of the semantic radical 衣 (yī) 'clothing' on the left, which marks the character's domain, and the phonetic component 能 (néng) 'ability' on the right. The compound originally referred to heavy, cumbersome clothing. Through semantic extension, its meaning shifted from this physical sense to a metaphorical description of a person who is ignorant, stupid, or lacking in social understanding.
