About
The character 褦 is a phono-semantic compound found almost exclusively in the binome '褦襶' (nàidài). It combines the semantic radical 衣 (yī, clothing) on the left with the phonetic component 能 (néng, ability) on the right. The compound originally described heavy, cumbersome clothing, but its meaning later extended metaphorically to characterize a person who is ignorant or socially inept.
