赛 is the simplified form of 賽, a phonosemantic compound. The bottom component 贝 (traditional 貝) depicts a cowrie shell, symbolizing wealth or valuable offerings, while the upper component 𡨄 provides the sound. Originally, the character referred to a ritual thank offering to deities. Because these ceremonies often included contests of skill to entertain the gods, the meaning later shifted to "compete", and it now broadly denotes competitions and contests.
