About
Originally meaning to tread or trample, 践 is a phono-semantic compound and the simplified form of 踐. The 足 (foot) component gives the meaning of an action involving the feet, while 戋 (jiān) provides the sound. Its sense later broadened from the literal act of stepping on something to abstract notions like fulfilling a promise, carrying out a duty, or putting theory into practice, as in words for "practice" or "fulfill".
