About
The character 韩 (hán) is a phono-semantic compound. In its traditional form 韓, the left side is the phonetic element 倝 (gàn), while the right side is the semantic radical 韋 (wéi), which originally referred to tanned leather. The simplified form 韩 retains this structure, with the left component written as 龺 and the right as the simplified leather radical 韦. Historically, the word denoted a type of wooden fence or leather barrier used to encircle a well. This concrete meaning has largely fallen out of use. The character was instead adopted as a proper noun, most notably for the ancient State of Han during the Warring States period. Today, it is best known as a common Chinese surname and as the standard term for South Korea and the Korean language.
