About
馕 is the simplified form of 饢, a phono-semantic compound. The left-side component, the food radical 饣 (derived from 食), conveys the meaning, while the right-side component 囊 (náng, 'bag') supplies the sound. A relatively modern coinage, it was created as a phonetic loan for the Persian and Central Asian word 'naan,' and refers exclusively to the baked flatbread that is a staple in Xinjiang and throughout Central Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines.
