驳 is a phono-semantic compound. The traditional form 駁 combines 馬 (horse) as the semantic component with the phonetic 爻. The simplified 驳 uses 马 on the left and 交 on the right. Originally, the character referred to a horse with a mixed or variegated coat, as opposed to a solid colour.
