Etymology
Pictograph of a hand holding a broom.
About
The character 彗 features two upper elements resembling 丰, depicting branches or grass stalks, above the component 彐, which represents a hand gripping these materials. Originally meaning a broom made from tied branches or grass, it later shifted primarily to describe a comet, often called a "broom star" because the comet's glowing tail resembles a broom's bristles. While the sense of a physical sweeping tool became obsolete, the astronomical meaning dominated, extending the visual metaphor of a sweeping tail to the celestial phenomenon.
