zhǒu broom
zhǒu variant of 帚[zhǒu]

Etymology

Pictograph of a broom.

About

The character originated as a pictograph of a broom. In early inscriptions, it clearly showed a tuft of bristles at the top and a handle below. The modern character retains this basic structure: the upper part suggests the bound bristles, while the lower part evolved from the handle. It exclusively means "broom" or "besom" and most commonly occurs in the compound 扫帚. Its definition has remained consistent throughout history.
