About
The character 未 is built from 木 (tree) by adding an extra horizontal stroke at the top to indicate additional branches. Its earliest meaning was "tree trunk", a sense later taken over by the character 枚. The now-common meaning "not yet" arose through phonetic borrowing. Visually, 未 is distinguished from 末 (tip) by the shorter top horizontal stroke; in 未, the top stroke is shorter than the one beneath it. 未 also names the eighth Earthly Branch in the traditional calendar system.
