About
The character 翣 is composed of the feather radical 羽 on the right, indicating feathers or wings, and the phonetic 妾 on the left. It denotes a large ceremonial fan or parasol that was traditionally fashioned from bird feathers. Such fans were borne by attendants in imperial or official processions to shade the personage and to display their elevated social status. The structure reflects the feathered material of the implement, while limiting the meaning to a ritual accessory as opposed to an everyday hand fan.
