About

The character 翌 is a phono-semantic compound, with the radical 羽 (feather or wing) at the top and the component 立 at the bottom providing its pronunciation. The radical 羽 originally connected it to concepts of birds or flight, but this concrete sense was fully replaced by a temporal meaning. In modern usage, 翌 functions almost exclusively in formal or written contexts to denote the next or following period, as in 翌日 (the next day) or 翌年 (the following year), serving as a literary alternative to more common temporal markers.
