About
The character 菰, which has not undergone simplification and thus has no distinct traditional form, is composed of the grass radical (艹) atop the phonetic component 孤. Its etymology connects it to a specific aquatic plant, Zizania latifolia, commonly known as wild rice stem or water bamboo, with the grass radical classifying it as a botanical entity. Historically, the character’s primary meaning referred to this plant, whose swollen stem, when infected by a fungus, becomes a vegetable known as gāosūn or water bamboo shoot. Over time, the semantic field of 菰 expanded to also denote the edible fungus itself that causes the stem to swell, creating a dual reference to both the host plant and the parasitic growth it supports.
