Its etymology connects it to a specific aquatic plant, Zizania latifolia, commonly known as wild rice stem or water bamboo, with the grass radical classifying it as a botanical entity. Historically, the character’s primary meaning referred to this plant, whose swollen stem, when infected by a fungus, becomes a vegetable known as gāosūn or water bamboo shoot. Over time, the semantic field of 菰 expanded to also denote the edible fungus itself that causes the stem to swell, creating a dual reference to both the host plant and the parasitic growth it supports.
