About
The character 赑 (bì) is a noun for the Bixi, a mythological dragon-turtle that carries heavy stone steles, and can also be an adjective meaning strong or heavy. It is the simplified form of 贔. Structurally, it stacks three 贝 (bèi, cowrie shell/wealth) components in a pyramid, a common formation implying great quantity or weight. This design originally conveyed immense physical burden, conceptually linking the character to the Bixi’s mythical feat. The simplification retained the triadic layout for visual impact while reducing stroke count, replacing the traditional 貝 with the simplified 贝.
