The character 饾 (simplified) or 餖 (traditional) is a phono-semantic compound. Its left component, the radical 食 (shí) or its simplified form 饣 (shí), indicates the semantic category of food. The right component, 豆 (dòu), provides the phonetic reading and may subtly reference vessels or small food items. Its core meaning is to set out or arrange food, particularly small portions or snacks for display. This is most commonly seen in the compound 饾饤, which originally described the arrangement of dishes for offerings or banquets. By extension, it came to metaphorically describe literary works that merely assemble quotations or trivia without originality or coherence.
