About
鳤 is a phono-semantic compound character for a type of fish, sometimes referred to as the giant tube fish or grass carp in dialects. It combines the simplified fish radical 鱼 (semantic) with the phonetic 管 (guǎn, meaning 'tube'). This character is the simplified version of the traditional 鱞 (guān or guǎn), which used the traditional fish radical 魚 and the phonetic 睘 (qióng). The traditional form had a dual meaning: a large fish and a widower or unmarried older man; simplification replaced the complex 睘 with the simpler, phonetically similar 管 to yield 鳤.
