About
The character 鳤 is a phono-semantic compound denoting a type of fish, sometimes identified as the giant tube fish or grass carp in regional dialects. It combines the semantic radical 鱼 (fish) on the left, indicating the category of aquatic animals, with the phonetic component 管 (guǎn, meaning "tube") on the right, which provides the pronunciation. 鳤 is the simplified form of the traditional character 鱞 (guān or guǎn), historically composed of the traditional fish radical 魚 and the phonetic component 睘 (qióng). This traditional form carried dual meanings: a specific large fish, and the concept of a widower or unmarried older man. Simplification replaced the complex 睘 with the phonetically similar and simpler 管, yielding the modern 鳤.
