About
稣 (traditional: 穌) is a phonosemantic compound combining 禾 "grain, seedlings" for meaning and 鱼 (魚) "fish" for sound. Its original sense of revival, gathering, or coming back to life drew on the abundance of staple foods to suggest restored vitality. In modern Chinese it is used almost exclusively to transcribe the name Jesus (耶稣), while the earlier agricultural and restorative meanings have become obsolete in everyday language.
