The traditional character 書 is a phono-semantic compound: 聿, depicting a hand holding a brush, provides the meaning, and 者 gives the sound. The simplified form 书 derives from cursive calligraphy, which condensed the strokes and eliminated the explicit brush imagery. Its original sense was the act of writing or recording, later broadening to refer to the written products, letters, documents, and bound volumes.
