About

Originally a pictograph of a right hand with fingers pointing upwards, 又 was the early form of the modern character 右. It was phonetically loaned to mean "again", "moreover", or "also", and this abstract sense replaced the original meaning "hand" when used alone. As a component in other characters, it often signals a hand action, serving as a semantic marker in many verb characters. Because the original meaning was lost, the character 右 was created by adding a mouth component (口) to distinctly represent the direction "right".
