The character 对 (duì), traditional form 對, is a compound ideograph. Its structure depicts a hand interacting with an object: the right-side component 寸 (cùn) represents a hand or an action, while the left side originally depicted a musical instrument or stand, later simplified to 又 (yòu), another hand symbol. The earliest meaning centered on responding or answering a question directed at someone. This concept of reciprocal interaction broadened to encompass the physical act of facing something, which led to the modern adjectival sense of being "correct" or "right".
