About
The character 妫 is a phono-semantic compound with the woman radical 女 on the left, linking it to female or family lineages, and the phonetic 为 (guī) on the right. Its traditional form 媯 pairs the same radical with the more complex phonetic 爲. Originally the name of the Gui River in present-day Shanxi, it later became an ancient surname for descendants of Emperor Shun. Today it is used almost exclusively as a rare family name or in historical geographic references.
