Definitions

péng (noun) friend

Etymology

Depicts a pair of strings of jade mounted together. The meaning later shifted to "friend". Not related to (moon), despite the visual similarity.

About

The character originally depicted two strings of jade mounted side by side as a pair, the identical elements conveying equivalence and companionship. Over time, the meaning broadened from a matched set of jade to "peer, companion", and ultimately became the common word for "friend". In the modern script, it is written with two components, but these are simply simplified forms of the original jade strings and have no connection to the moon radical.
