About
畴, the simplified counterpart of 疇, is a phono-semantic compound: the radical 田 'field' gives the meaning, and 寿 (derived from 壽) provides the sound. Its earliest sense was measured and divided arable land, specifically fields that had been marked out and prepared for crops. From this concrete image of classified plots, the character's meaning expanded to denote abstract categories, classes, or groups of things sharing common features. In contemporary Chinese, it most often appears in academic or philosophical discourse to mean a domain, scope, or category of thought. A vestige of its agrarian origin remains in literary references to fields, but the visual metaphor of partitioned farmland has been entirely abstracted.
