Etymology

Simplified form of 盜. Depicts a gluttonous person drooling (㳄) for food inside of a dish (皿). The meaning later shifted to "steal", "rob", and "bandit".

About

盗 is the simplified version of the traditional character 盜. In its traditional form, 盜 was a compound of 皿 (a vessel or shallow bowl) and 㳄, a pictograph of a person drooling with open mouth over the vessel's contents. Together they vividly represented covetous desire for another's food. Over time, this imagery gave rise to the extended meanings "steal", "rob", and "bandit". The simplified 盗 replaces the drooling figure with 次, losing the pictorial quality but retaining the dish and the fundamental meaning of illicitly taking others' property.
