About

The character is a phono-semantic compound with the semantic radical (xué, 'cave, hole') placed above the phonetic (zú, 'soldier; to finish'). Historically, it described things suddenly emerging from a hole or confined space, a meaning clearly motivated by the cave radical. Over time, its use shifted toward onomatopoeia, most notably in the compound 悉窣 (xīsū), which evokes rustling, whispering, or scratching sounds, like garments rubbing together or small animals moving through undergrowth. Although the literal cave association faded in everyday language, persists in classical literature and descriptive prose for rendering faint, continuous auditory textures.
