Pictograph of a net.
About
The character for "net" began as a direct pictograph, originally depicting a simple, crisscrossing lattice of cords or threads used for catching fish or animals. Over time, its form was stylized and regularized within the clerical script, solidifying into a structure that abstractly retained the image of intersecting lines. This pictographic core is still visible in the modern, simplified form "网", which mirrors the earliest concept. A traditional and more complex form, "網", later emerged by adding the silk radical "糸" to emphasize the material and the phonetic component "亡", though the essence remained unchanged. From its concrete origin, the meaning broadened to encompass any interconnected or entrapping system, leading to its use in words for networks, webs, and meshes of both physical and abstract nature.
