The character 区 is the simplified form of 區, which in its traditional structure combines the enclosure radical 匸 (xǐ) with 品, a stack of objects, depicting a group of things stored or concealed within an enclosed space. The simplified version replaces the inner component with a simple mark and uses the radical 匚 (fāng). This imagery of items kept in a bounded area gave rise to the associated meanings of sorting, dividing, and classifying. Today, 区 primarily refers to a demarcated area, such as an administrative district, geographical region, or clearly defined zone.
