About
奂 is the simplified form of 奐, which originally combined the components 穴 (house), 人 (person), and 廾 (two hands) to depict taking something from a person's house. Its modern meanings of "excellent", "brilliant", or "abundant" are phonetic loans, appearing almost exclusively in the literary idiom 美轮美奂 (měilúnměihuàn) to describe magnificent architecture. Although the simplified character incorporates 大 (dà, "large"), its sense of grandeur comes from the loan usage rather than the visual structure. Historically it also conveyed abundance and leisurely ease, but today it functions only as a bound morpheme in a few fixed expressions.
