brown bear

Etymology

About

The character 罴 denotes a brown bear, with its simplified form composed of the net radical 罒 (wǎng) over 罢 (bà). The traditional form, 羆, is more complex, adding the fire/paw radical 灬 (huǒ/biāo) at the bottom, visually linking it to 熊 (xióng), the common character for bear. Although the simplified version streamlines the strokes by using 罢, both forms refer to a large, fierce bear frequently mentioned in classical Chinese literature, military metaphors, and ancient texts on wildlife and hunting.
