brown bear

Etymology

About

is the character for the brown bear, a large and fierce species. The modern simplified character stacks the net radical (wǎng) over (bà). In its traditional form, , the same net radical crowns a more elaborate lower part ending in the four dots (huǒ/biāo), which can indicate fire or animal paws and makes the character resemble (xióng), the standard bear. The simplified version trimmed strokes by using , but both iterations refer to the same formidable bear that appears in classical literature, military metaphors, and early writings on wildlife and hunting.
