About
蓏 is a phono-semantic compound combining the grass radical 艹 (vegetation) with the component 㼌, which doubles the 瓜 ('melon') character. In classical Chinese, it designated edible fruits from creeping or ground-dwelling plants, melons, gourds, and pumpkins, in contrast with 果, which referred to fruits growing on trees.
