About
The character 阌 (wén), in its traditional form 閿, is a phono-semantic compound with a narrow, geographically specific use. Its structure combines the radical 门 (mén), meaning "gate" and indicating a location, with the phonetic component 文 (wén) for pronunciation; the traditional form uses 受 (shòu) instead. This character is almost exclusively a proper noun in the place name 阌乡 (Wénxiāng), an ancient county in modern Henan that was a key transportation hub near the Yellow River before being submerged by the Sanmenxia Reservoir.
