About
阌 (wén) is a phono-semantic compound, with the traditional form 閿. The enclosing radical 门 (simplified) or 門 (traditional) means 'gate' and indicates a place or architectural structure. Inside, the phonetic is 文 (wén) in the simplified character, while the traditional 閿 uses 受 (shòu). The character appears almost exclusively in the toponym 阌乡 (Wénxiāng), an ancient county in present-day Henan province that served as a crucial transportation hub on the Yellow River before being submerged by the Sanmenxia Reservoir.
