About

A phono-semantic compound, (traditional ) pairs the door radical () with the phonetic (). The radical indicates an action or state linked to doors, gates, and physical barriers; the phonetic supplies the pronunciation and completes the architectural picture. Originally, the character denoted the concrete action of opening a door, unlocking a gate, or unfastening a closure, the shift from a closed to an open condition. Over time, this physical opening acquired a metaphorical layer, expressing emotional openness in the form of joy, clarity, and enlightenment. Today it survives primarily in classical texts and formal names.
