Definitions

biǎn (adj) flat

Etymology

Pictograph of a signboard attached to a door. Based on the original meaning "signboard". The meaning later shifted to "tablet" and "flat".

About

The character "扁" is structurally composed of 户, meaning door, and 冊, meaning book or register, with the combination etymologically indicating a flat inscribed object like a door plaque. Its early meaning centered on such flat tablets or nameplates, which later broadened to describe the general attribute of flatness. This then extended to verbal uses meaning to flatten or press flat, and in contemporary colloquial language, it acquired the additional informal sense of to beat or thrash.
