Water 氺 contained by a dam
About
The character "泰", in its traditional form which is largely unchanged, is composed of the components 水 (water) and 龹, which some analyses interpret as depicting two hands. Its earliest meaning was related to "slippery" or "smooth", a concept likely derived from the feeling or movement of water. This sense later extended to imply things proceeding smoothly, which developed into the idea of stability and security. From this notion of stability, the character acquired its core abstract meanings of "peaceful" and "tranquil", as seen in terms like 泰平 (peace). It also came to signify extremity or magnitude, as in 泰山 (Mount Tai), implying greatness and solidity, a meaning reinforced by the mountain's cultural status.
