About
The character 秦 combines the semantic radical 禾 (grain) with an upper structure originally depicting hands using a pestle to process grain. Its etymology reflects early agrarian practices, which led to its adoption as a place name. During the Zhou dynasty, 秦 designated the State of Qin, whose eventual unification of China established the first imperial dynasty. Consequently, the term evolved from an agricultural description to a historical and geographical identifier, now referring both to the Qin dynasty and to the modern Shaanxi province region.
