About
A modern phono-semantic compound coined for scientific use, 嗪 pairs the mouth radical 口 on the left with the phonetic 秦 on the right. In modern chemical nomenclature, 口 often marks characters that phonetically transcribe foreign terms, while 秦 provides the pronunciation qín. The character was created expressly to render the "-azine" suffix and similar nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds from Western chemical terminology, for example, piperazine (哌嗪). Entirely a product of technical coinage, it has no historical evolution, classical application, or everyday meaning, and is restricted to the domains of chemistry and pharmacology.
