The character 或 (huò) is formed from 戈 (gē, a weapon), 囗 (wéi, an area), and 一 (yī, a boundary). Together they depict a weapon defending an enclosed territory. The original meaning of 或 was "area", a sense that later required the addition of the 土 (earth) radical, giving us 域. Once the meaning "area" was taken over by 域, the character 或 was borrowed phonetically to serve as the conjunction "or" and the adverb "perhaps".
