About
The character 戎 is formed from two components: 戈, which represents a halberd or long-handled weapon, and 十. In ancient script, that component depicted armor or a shield, though it now looks like the number ten. The combination of an offensive weapon with defensive gear gave the character its original broad meaning of 'arms', all kinds of weaponry and military equipment. From there, the meaning widened to include the military as an institution, warfare in general, and the soldiers who fight. The character was also used historically to name various nomadic tribes that lived to the west of ancient Chinese states.
