About
下 (xià) began as a simple ideograph: a small line or dot placed beneath a longer horizontal stroke to indicate the spatial idea of "down", the opposite of 上. A vertical stroke was later added to distinguish the character from 二 (two), giving the modern form, a long upper horizontal, a downward vertical, and a dot. Its basic meaning "below" then expanded into related actions and abstractions, including descending, going down, issuing orders from a higher authority, and denoting the latter part of a period (such as the second half of a day).
