Etymology

Pictograph of a basket, now written as . The current meaning is a phonetic loan.

About

The character "其" originated as a pictograph for a winnowing basket, a sense later designated by the compound character "箕" formed by adding the bamboo radical to "其". Early textual use saw "其" borrowed phonetically to function as a third-person possessive or demonstrative pronoun, a grammatical role that eventually supplanted its original nominal meaning. The contemporary form of "其" retains a structure that is a stylized reduction of its initial pictographic shape, and it is now employed solely as a pronoun or particle, with the tangible object it once depicted entirely expressed by the derivative character "箕".
