Etymology
Pictograph of two hands holding up a vessel.
About
共 originally depicted two hands holding up a vessel, a pictograph of offering or sharing. The bottom part 廾 (gǒng) represents the hands, and the top part is the vessel. Its earliest meaning was to offer respectfully or to supply, which later branched into the related character 供 (gōng). The primary meaning then shifted to sharing, commonality, and collective action, reflecting joint effort and mutual participation. Today, 共 is widely used for concepts of totality, togetherness, and shared attributes.
