About

is a phono-semantic compound character: the semantic radical (meaning "grass" or "plant") signals its botanical sense, and the phonetic component gives the pronunciation. It originally referred to the budding stems of leafy vegetables, particularly mustard greens, and by extension came to describe lush, flourishing plant growth. In modern Chinese, the character is almost entirely confined to the culinary term 雪里蕻 (xuělǐhóng), a variety of potherb mustard that is commonly pickled and eaten as a traditional vegetable dish.
