About

The character 而 (ér) originated as a pictograph depicting facial hair hanging from a person's chin and cheeks. Its structure features a top horizontal stroke for the jawline, with downward vertical and sweeping strokes representing strands of hair. Like many anatomical pictographs in Chinese, its original physical meaning was abandoned when the character was phonetically borrowed for grammatical use. It evolved into a versatile conjunction connecting verbs, adjectives, or clauses to express coordination, contrast, or the sequence of actions in a sentence.
